An Interview with Ané Brockman, St Hilliers’ Senior Project Engineer:
What is your role and area of specialty?
I am a Senior Project Engineer in WA, specialising in commercial construction and more recently, Defence. I am also heavily involved in contract administration across a couple of projects and occasionally assist with tender methodologies and programming. On a daily basis, I’m responsible for checking in with our subcontractors, completing QA/QC inspections, coordinating upcoming works with relevant Defence stakeholders and brainstorming RFIs and alternative methodologies with the team.
How long have you been in the industry, and what is your background?
I entered the industry 7 years ago, completing a Bachelor of Applied Science for Construction Management and Economics at Curtin University in Western Australia. I undertook work experience with AusGroup whilst at Uni, completing refinery shutdowns and maintenance and was then accepted into the CIMIC Graduate programme after finishing my studies. With 4 years of industry experience behind me, I made the jump to St Hilliers WA, where I was employed as a Project Engineer in 2020.
What is your career highlight?
I’m extremely proud of my achievements within the industry; my top 3 career highlights to date would include being a finalist in CIMIC’s ‘Grad of the Year’ in 2018, receiving a NAWIC WA Judges Commendation for ‘Young Achiever’ in 2019 and being recognised within the ‘Top 20 Women in Construction’ in 2020.
What are your goals/ plans for the future?
I’m currently working towards my next career goal, to become a Project Manager. I love being a part of the WA unit and it’s extremely rewarding to see all of our projects develop from the early ‘bid’ stages through to completion. In addition to my membership with NAWIC WA, I’m currently a member of St Hillier’s Wellbeing Committee, which is designed to identify and implement mental health and wellness initiatives across the company. Most recently, I joined the ESG working group at St Hilliers, who are working to measure our performance as a business, ensuring we are continuously striving for improved practices and working towards sustainability. I look forward to continuing my involvement and contributing to the growth and future success of our business.
We asked St Hilliers’ WA Lead, John Moore, about Ané’s contributions to his team:
“Having worked with Ané for approximately 2 years now, I continue to be impressed by her determined approach to see success for St Hilliers teams. Ané is a diligent staff member that has provided great flexibility, working in various roles across the Projects. I have no doubt that Ané has a great future ahead, continuing professional growth with St Hilliers!”
