St Hilliers was appointed as Head Contractor for the Stage 2 package of works at the Wide Bay Training Area. This followed our successful completion of Stage 1 of the works and was extremely satisfying in that it confirmed the satisfaction of the Department of Defence for the prior contract and their confidence in our ability to be able to deliver on earthworks, civil and structure works to Defence specifications. The purpose of the Stage 2 package of works is to provide additional training facilities, accommodation and supporting infrastructure to support training activities conducted at Wide Bay Training Area.
A major challenge of the project was to undertake the works in an operational army base where the program of works has to be carefully worked into the training operations schedule. This was achieved through early stakeholder engagement and collaborative development of staging plans and service outage schedules.
Extensive road and pavement works occurred within the base as part of this project including the construction of unsealed pavement hard stand designed to withstand the force of detonated explosives and remediation and upgrade of existing roads, with material won from on-site quarries.
