The site is located 35km from Canberra CBD, ‘Miowera’ is a 368 hectare property chosen because it met the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residential rehabilitation service Reference Group’s site selection criteria of quality land, valued by both the ACT Government and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
The Ngunnawal Bush Healing Facility addresses the need for a culturally based alcohol and drug rehabilitation centre which operates as a therapeutic community for members of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. The objective of the new centre was to establish and manage an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander rehabilitation ‘health farm’ as a strong cultural base to:

  • Rehabilitate and strengthen Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and their families who are ‘at risk’
  • Foster self-determination amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, especially young people, by linking them with work, education, training, health and well-being programs
  • Sustain Ngunnawal identity, spirituality and culture, especially for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people.

The broad facility includes:

  • Main building to accommodate a main reception, administration and staff amenities, therapy and rehabilitation space and shared client amenities including lounge and kitchen areas
  • Two four-bed cottages to provide residential accommodation for those requiring rehabilitation with capacity to accommodate eight clients requiring treatment
  • Outdoor space and facilities including courtyards
