St Hilliers took a proactive approach to secure this major contract to redevelop the Anzac Park West offices as the national headquarters of the Australian Federal Police.
Constructed in the mid 1960s, Anzac Park West is heritage listed ‘as a portal building for the vista it provides along the land axis between Parliament House and the Australian War Memorial’. To bring the building, which had been ‘mothballed’ since 1999, up to A-grade commercial accommodation required a total infrastructure upgrade.
St Hilliers managed an integrated, multi-disciplined team of experts in architecture and engineering services to design and construct the project, which was an Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) benchmark for the client.
Many ESD initiatives to achieve a 4.5 ABGR and a 5 Star Green Star rating were featured in the project and included the use of recycled timbers and materials with a low content of volatile organic compounds, double glazed windows, rainwater harvesting and grey water re-use and efficient airconditioning.
A major challenge of refurbishing this heritage building was the installation of electrical services that involved state-of-the-art technology. St Hilliers was able to overcome this challenge with the use of highly experienced subcontractors. Electrical services installed and commissioned included; digital lighting, which is controlled by individual users, two sets of motor generators to provide back-up power to ensure that all systems remain fully operational, extra low frequency shielding in critical area to ensure the operation of various communications systems do not interfere with each other and a state-of-the-art security system.
